Making Space for Art is a book on the alternative spaces for art in Bengaluru, India. The book focuses on 1 Shanthi Road. Located at the center of the city, Suresh Jayaram, following his family tradition of making and preserving knowledge in a collective atmosphere, turned his ancestral property into an art adda, and later on expanded to accommodate the varying needs of a studio, gallery, discursive space, hangout and much more, taking the help of the award winning architect like Meeta Jain. Formally started in 2003, 1 Shanthi Road now is the byword for alternative art practices in India. 1 Shanthi Road is not a ‘conventional’ art lab, but a very loose structure that is capable of accommodating anything that the artists want to put under the blanket term ‘art’, including lazing around.
