Vacancy: HMK is looking for editorial committee members

Hotel Maria Kapel is looking for an editorial committee for a year of reflection, maintenance and repositioning

Working pattern: 8 hours per week
Period: 1 April 2019 – 31 March 2020

Deadline: 20 February
Interviews: 25 February – 1 March

Hotel Maria Kapel (HMK) is an artists initiative that facilitates contemporary artists to develop and exhibit work as artists in residence. It is located in two buildings: the 16th century Maria Chapel in the center of Hoorn, which houses the exhibition space, cinema and reception room, and an adjacent building, which houses a flat/studio-combination where artists can live and work during a set period. Hotel Maria Kapel offers support for research and experimentation, and creates the preconditions to make this artistic process visible to the public. The artistic ambitions of the artists that HMK invites are its guiding principle.

Over the past 15 years a succession of different teams have been in charge of HMK and we feel it is now time for a period of reflection on the functioning and positioning of the HMK. For this ‘year of reflection, maintenance and repositioning’, the board is seeking to put together an editorial committee of three individuals, that will develop a programme, in collaboration with the coordinator, HMK team and volunteers. This year programme will be used to reflect on HMK’s policy with respect to both the content and the business, and on how it is put into practice on a daily basis. Its purpose is to create a sound foundation for the repositioning of HMK and to do so in a transparent way. At the same time, with this programme, the committee is responsible for manifestly strengthening certain areas and aspects of HMK.

To form the editorial committee Hotel Maria Kapel is looking for 3 people who, in collaboration with our current team, want to involve themselves with the present and future of HMK, starting 1 April, 2019

In your function as editorial committee member you will be allocated assignments on a freelance basis during a fixed period of one year, for 8 hours a week. Together with the other members of the committee
– you will develop a sustainable longterm vision for HMK, with respect to both the content and organization of its activities
– you will develop a programme for one year, which gives the public insight into your (thought)process
– as a part of this programme, you will develop a fitting policy for education and communication, together with the HMK team
– you carry the end responsibility for the content and execution of this programme
– you lead in a way that gives others room to develop their own initiative
– you provide information for, and assist with, regular and incidental subsidy applications and financial accountability
– you will write the annual report for 2019 (assisted by the coordinator and possibly the board)
– you will prepare estimates
– you will draw up a profile for the future management of HMK

We are looking for people with the following profile:
– you are an artist, curator or thinker with your own practice, and you want to develop a meaningful position for HMK with respect to the institutional and local context in which it operates
– you are not just interested, but have verifiable experience in working with the locality of an institution that has extra-local ambition; in involving different segments of the public in complex art practices; and in bringing together collaborative efforts
– you want to involve others in your thought process and you understand what it means to have shared authorship
– you don’t just want to think about organization, infrastructure, and internal and external relations, but you also want to implement and make manifest your ideas
– you are able to report in writing, the whole process and resulting vision to the board and subsidy providers

What HMK offers is:
– the opportunity to explore individual and shared interests in both an investigative and practical manner, and to use this to create a sustainable framework for the future of a unique artists initiative
– 0.2fte per committee member (€600 ex VAT/month)
