In the window of sex shop Adult Nation are a number of objects whose exact purpose is unclear, but nevertheless look very seductive. Why is it that these shapes, colours and textures tickle and charm our senses so wonderfully? Are these toys? Where do these objects come from, and where do they belong?

As part of their residency at Hotel Maria Kapel, Sijben Rosa organised a series of workshops entitled Queer Clay Club in June. Together with the participants [queers and queer allies], we examined the material world around us and asked questions about how our queerness requires us to constantly reshape it. After all, many things are not as obvious as they seem.

Scattered among the sex toys are a number of sculptures resulting from a material exercise during the second workshop: Sculpturen van begeerte. Participants were asked to mould objects that are seductive and sexy, but playfully avoid direct reference to usual forms.
