Access Note of HMK
For those visiting Hotel Maria Kapel for the first time, it might be useful to know more about accessibility in our beautiful but challenging building.
Due to steps and staircases throughout the building, HMK is not currently wheelchair friendly. We are a small institution with limited resources and sadly do not foresee making HMK an accessible space for wheelchair users in the near future. If you would like a virtual tour of HMK we are happy to arrange it.
HMK is easily available by train from across the Netherlands. We are located Korte Achterstraat 2A from Hoorn Station. Paid parking is available around the corner from HMK under the trees and free parking is available at Nieuwe Wal 4, 1621 MB, which is 1 km from HMK.
We have 3 separated all-gender bathrooms without grab bars. The toilets are located in the basement and accessible via a staircase. Due to COVID-19, only two toilets are currently in use.
It may be useful for you to know that HMK can be an acoustically challenging space. Due to its old age, the chapel can be cold in winters and hot in summers.
All of our written information is provided in Dutch and English. If you prefer to be guided through the exhibitions we are happy to tell you about them. Our events are spoken in English or Dutch, information on language can be found in our event descriptions. At this moment we, unfortunately, cannot offer sign language interpretation.
Admission to our exhibitions, excluding certain events, is free (or on donation) and no ID is required to enter the building. If an event is ticketed information about costs will be available online.
Children are welcome at HMK. Animals are also welcome but we ask that you keep them on a leash. If you are allergic to animals and want to make sure that our space is clean, please get in touch and we do our best to arrange an allergen-free space.
Seating options at programs will include stable chairs and stools. We will do our best to provide other seating if requested. If you need to move around, rest, twitch, pace, or not make eye contact, know that you are welcome here. We have a quiet garden that is nice for taking breaks during warmer months and several spaces that can be used for retracting. If you’d like to know more, please email us.
Taking photographs of our exhibitions is allowed. Please refrain from photographing other visitors without permission. Please let us know if you do not want to be photographed.
Note that some programs may be held off-site. Access details will be included with event information online.
We are a small team that do our best to accommodate guests. Please contact us via office@hotelmariakapel.nl if you have requests or questions about any of the above.
