For their residency at Hotel Maria Kapel, artist Kwinnie Lê investigates the erasure of tattoo traditions under colonial rule, and the subsequent demonization of its practices in the years since. An installation of suspended tapestries covered with semi-fictional writings will set the arena for meetings, performances and private tattooing rituals with guest-participants Joe Patty Sabandar (traditional tattoo artist), Fileona Dkhar (visual artist) and Nash Caldera (visual artist), thus investigating their cultural heritage and the way it has been excluded from the modern tattoo industry.

Nash Caldera is a visual and performance artist from Curaçao, based in the Netherlands. Working with photography, video, installation, sound and performance, she explores and attempts to understand the multiplicity of her identity as a Queer Black Woman from Curaçao. She intends to create new narratives and new understanding of the notion of home by looking into the idea of nostalgia, and how our senses trigger memories that might let us experience the feeling of home even in other places. Spirituality, food, language and superstition are very present in Caldera’s practice, which gives her space to play around with different concepts of dimensions and time. She acquired an interest in rhythm and cadence through language, which she is now attempting to infuse into her work in combination with her obsession with food. Caldera strives to translate her feelings into experiences so others can be emotionally triggered.
Fileona Endoxa Dkhar is a Khasi artist living and working between Shillong, India, and Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Her practice traverses through the mediums of photography, writing, drawing and filmmaking. Her work often explores indigenous worldviews, with a particular focus on identity, history, and ecology. Dkhar's artistic approach is inspired by Trinh T. Minh-ha, adopting a decolonial stance that emphasizes "speaking nearby" rather than speaking about, for, with, or of a subject. Dkhar completed her MFA at Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, in 2021. She has previously shown work in Khoj Arts in India, ArtJameel in the UAE, as well as galleries and institutions in the Netherlands, including Tale of A Tub, Nieuwe Vide, V2, Mama Rotterdam, and iii Den Haag.
