Tijdens deze online filmvertoning en talk nodigt kunstenaar Sijben Rosa Simon(e) van Saarloos uit om samen met hen te reflecteren op de film A little bit like the soul, die werd voltooid tijdens Sijben's residency bij HMK en eerder dit jaar in première ging. In hun film heroverweegt Sijben de hetronormatieve sociale normen rondom zorg door middel van een sculpturale performance waarin vier mensen die zich identificeren als queer samenleven met een groot object dat Sijben heeft gemaakt. De film roept vragen op over zorg, aanraking, relaties en gender, die het uitgangspunt vormen voor een informeel gesprek tussen Sijben, Simon(e) en het publiek.

Sijben Rosa (they/them) grew up in Hoorn. They make objects and choreographs situations around them. Sijben is interested in creating objects that elude practical function and expectations of efficiency. Over the past decade, Sijben has explored how material ambiguity may open up alternative ways of relating to our surroundings and, in turn, foster greater social connection. They graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2012. Their work has been exhibited in The Netherlands and abroad, at Biquini Wax, Mexico City; Kunstverein, Düsseldorf; Museum van Loon, Amsterdam; KW, Berlin; Salt, Istanbul; CAB, Brussels; De Appel, Amsterdam; and SculptureCenter, New York City among others. Sijben Rosa currently lives and works in Amsterdam and teaches at various art academies in the Netherlands.
Simon(e) van Saarloos is the author of Playing Monogamy, Take ‘Em Down. Scattered Monuments and Queer Forgetting and Against Ageism. A Queer Manifesto as well as several books in Dutch: Herdenken herdacht; Enz. Het Wildersproces; Het monogame drama; the novel De vrouw die and the collection of columns Ik deug / deug niet. They also work as a freelance curator of public programming and artistic collaborations. Recent projects include the museum installation Cruising Gezi Park, the spread of a mo(nu)ment, IDFA’s 2022 and 2023 queer program Not Yet Yes and Contagious & Queer, the 2023 lecture series Juicy Refuge at Rietveld Academy’s Studium Generale, the ABUNDANCE exhibition at Het HEM and the multi-year transnational queer community, nightlife and art project Through the Window.
Van Saarloos also writes fiction. Recent productions include the short sci-fi story “Dreamdead Surrender” (Postmodern Culture Journal) and De Foetushemel, a theater play about abortion and violent resistance for Ulrike Quade Company at Bellevue Theater Amsterdam. They have participated in artist residencies such as the KAVLI Institute for Nanosciences, Deltaworkers New Orleans and Be Mobile Create Together at IKSV in Istanbul. Van Saarloos currently pursues a PhD in Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley.
